GRACE BEYOND REASON
PATTY: Yes, I have taken this title from Jerry Miller’s soon to be published book. Jerry and his wife Jo have been dear friends of ours for over forty years! Both Dan and I have read a digital copy of this book and were deeply impressed by Jerry’s comprehensive understanding of grace, the grace that in the end is unreasonable. Accessing and living in God’s grace is essential in order to thrive in today’s world of crumbling economic and social structures. Jerry strongly reiterates again and again that this grace is entered into by faith and received by faith. The reason so many of us fail to access this grace is because we try to figure it out, or try to find reasons why we deserve it. Shame blinds the eyes of our hearts.
One of the repercussions of partaking of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil is our incessant striving to understand everything, to assign good and evil to circumstances, feelings and even our assessment of God and others. If something is deemed unreasonable we do not accept it and we judge God or others as being unfair and in the process we close our hearts. Hence, our ability to receive God’s grace is weak because of our lack of trust/faith in God’s wisdom and his goodness. Most of all, our unbelief in the unconditional nature of God’s love blinds us But the Word states that this grace is beyond comprehension, as well as his peace which is beyond understanding and the resultant joy that becomes unspeakable. God’s love is so abundant and rich that we need to be strengthened in the inner man through the Spirit in order to comprehend how wide, how long deep, how high it is. When the penny drops and we accept and receive this love, fear dissipates.
This time is the opportunity to dig deep into the Word, that which is eternal and cannot be shaken. We need to come to a deeper knowledge of God and our identity in him. It is time to dig until we hit solid rock and from this place to build our lives so that the storms cannot destroy us. When we see God for who he is and believe we are who he says we are, we can come boldly before his throne and believe that we will receive whatever we need to live this life. His grace is an empowerment that enables us to go through the storms of life with peace and joy. It is time that shame is broken off us and that we know our righteousness. It is time to throw off our unreasonable efforts to understand good and evil, pain and suffering, and to come into the mysterious, wonderful arms of a loving God. God is for us and not against us. There is now no condemnation for those who are in the Messiah Yeshua (Romans 8:1). Nothing will separate us from his love, so let us let go of any offenses we may have toward God and freely receive his grace by faith.
